Stealth Camping
Stealth camping is not so much about saving money... it is an exciting experience!
Basically, stealth camping is putting up a tent where nobody will find you.
The best spots are in forests right off the highway or freeway access ramps.
Before stealth camping, make sure to have all the water and food needed until next morning,
and then keep riding until it starts to get dark. As soon as there are no cars around,
quickly disappear and find a spot that cannot be seen or accessed very easily.
It can be scary to camp out in the wild, as nobody knows where you are in case something happens.
You're exposed to the weather, wildlife and people that might not be well-intentioned,
but all those risks make it so exciting.
Whether stealth camping is legal or not is up to debate.
By picking spots far from buildings, not leaving any trash behind and keeping a low profile
I think it's not a problem. I avoid places with No Trespassing signs and try not to cross any gates.
Generally, the best places are heavily forested areas right off the highway. The best spots are off
freeways, because nobody will stop, walk a dog or meander around.
I have never been evicted or run into trouble. Close to the
Mexican border I was found by Border Patrol once, but they were friendly and were fine with me camping out.
Looking at the Satellite View of Google Maps helps a lot with finding stealth camping spots.
You can easily identify forested areas and ensure there are no buildings close by.
Street View allows to check how heavily forested an area is. Ideally a forest should have
low bushes along the road to provide protection from being seen from the road.
